TUTORIAL SERIES: VEGETATIVE STAGE CARE TUTORIAL

Objective: To promote vigorous growth and strong structural development in cannabis plants during the vegetative stage.

• Cannabis seedlings or clones
• Grow medium (soil, coco coir, or hydroponics setup)
• Nutrient solution appropriate for vegetative growth
• pH meter
• Grow lights (MH, HPS, or LED)
• Fans for air circulation
• Thermometer and hygrometer
• Water pH between 5.8 - 6.5 (hydro and coco) or 6.0 - 7.0 (soil)
• Pruning shears

• Preparation: When seedlings have 3-4 sets of true leaves, transplant them into larger containers with your chosen grow medium.
• Watering: Water lightly after transplanting and ensure the plants are stable and supported.

• Light Cycle: Provide an 18/6 or 20/4 light/dark cycle to maximize vegetative growth. Continuous light (24/0) is also an option but can stress some plants.
• Light Intensity: Use high-intensity lights like MH, HPS, or LED. Place lights 12-24 inches above the canopy, adjusting based on light type and intensity.
• Height Adjustment: Raise the lights as plants grow to maintain optimal distance.

• Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 70-85°F (21-29°C) during the day and slightly cooler at night.
• Humidity: Aim for 40-70% humidity. Higher humidity (60-70%) is beneficial in early vegetative stages, gradually decreasing as plants grow.

• Watering Frequency: Water plants when the top inch of the soil is dry (for soil) or when the medium starts to dry out (for coco and hydro). Avoid overwatering.
• Nutrient Solution: Use a nutrient solution high in nitrogen (N) with adequate phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Start with 1/4 to 1/2 strength and gradually increase based on plant response.
• pH Levels: Maintain water and nutrient solution pH between 5.8-6.5 for hydro and coco, and 6.0-7.0 for soil. Use a pH meter to monitor and adjust.

• Fans: Use oscillating fans to provide good air circulation, strengthen plant stems, and prevent mold.
• Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation to exchange air and maintain CO2 levels.

• Topping: Consider topping plants to encourage bushier growth and more bud sites. Cut the main stem above the 3rd to 5th node.
• Low Stress Training (LST): Gently bend and tie down branches to create an even canopy and increase light penetration.
• Defoliation: Remove some lower leaves and branches that receive little light to improve airflow and light distribution.

• Daily Checks: Inspect plants daily for signs of nutrient deficiencies, pests, or disease. Look for yellowing leaves, spots, or unusual growth patterns.
• Adjustments: Make necessary adjustments to nutrient levels, pH, light height, and environmental conditions based on plant health.

• Timing: Vegetative stage typically lasts 4-8 weeks, depending on desired plant size and strain. When ready to transition, switch to a 12/12 light cycle to induce flowering.
• Final Pruning: Conduct a final pruning and training session before switching to the flowering stage.

• Patience: Allow plants to fully develop during the vegetative stage to ensure strong flowering later.
• Observation: Regularly monitor and respond to plant needs. Early intervention can prevent major issues.
• Cleanliness: Maintain a clean grow environment to prevent pests and diseases.
