TUTORIAL SERIES: FLOWERING STAGE CARE TUTORIAL

TUTORIAL SERIES: GROWING CANNABIS FROM SEED TO HARVEST

By: Uriel Advance Grows

Harvesting Stage Care Tutorial

Objective: To harvest cannabis plants at their peak ripeness for maximum potency, flavor, and yield.

Materials Needed:

  • Cannabis plants ready for harvest
  • Pruning shears or scissors
  • Clean workspace
  • Drying racks or hangers
  • Hygrometer and thermometer
  • Gloves (optional)
  • Trimming tray and tools
  • Containers for trimmed buds
  • Labels and markers

Determining Ripeness:

  • Trichome Check: Use a magnifying glass or microscope to examine the trichomes on your buds. Harvest when trichomes are mostly milky white with some amber for the best potency and effects.
  • Pistil Color: Look at the pistils (hairs) on the buds. They should be mostly brown or red and have receded into the buds.

Preparing for Harvest:

  • Flushing: Flush your plants with plain, pH-balanced water for the last 1-2 weeks before harvest to remove excess nutrients and improve taste.
  • Workspace: Set up a clean, well-lit workspace with all necessary tools and materials.

Cutting Plants:

  • Timing: Harvest in the early morning, if possible, when terpene levels are highest.
  • Cutting Branches: Use pruning shears or scissors to cut branches from the main stem. Handle plants gently to avoid damaging trichomes.

Manicuring (Wet Trim vs. Dry Trim):

Wet Trim: Trim leaves immediately after cutting branches.

  • Pros: Easier to handle, less risk of mold, faster drying.
  • Cons: Can be time-consuming, sticky and messy.

Dry Trim: Trim leaves after drying.

  • Pros: Easier to trim dry leaves, more terpene retention.
  • Cons: Takes more space for drying, longer drying process.

Drying:

Hang Drying: Hang branches upside down in a dark, cool room with good air circulation.

  • Temperature: Keep the room between 60-70°F (15-21°C).
  • Humidity: Maintain humidity levels between 50-60%.
  • Drying Racks: Alternatively, use drying racks for smaller buds.
  • Monitoring: Check daily for signs of mold or over-drying. Drying usually takes 7-14 days.

HerbsNow Dryer:

  • Setup: Place trimmed buds evenly in the HerbsNow dryer trays. Do not overcrowd.
  • Temperature and Duration: The HerbsNow dryer is designed to dry buds at a consistent low temperature, typically around 60-70°F (15-21°C), and takes about 96 hours (4 days) for optimal drying.
  • Monitoring: Check the buds daily to ensure they are drying evenly and to avoid overdrying. The HerbsNow dryer maintains ideal conditions, reducing the risk of mold and preserving terpenes.

Curing:

  • Trimming: Once buds are dry, trim off remaining sugar leaves using trimming scissors.
  • Jar Storage: Place trimmed buds in airtight glass jars. Fill jars about 75% full to allow some air exchange.
  • Burping: For the first 1-2 weeks, open jars for 15-30 minutes daily to release moisture and allow fresh air in.
  • Curing Period: Continue curing for at least 2-4 weeks, with some growers curing for several months for optimal flavor and potency.

Storing:

  • Long-term Storage: Store cured buds in a cool, dark place in airtight containers to preserve potency and flavor.
  • Humidity Packs: Consider using humidity control packs (like Boveda) to maintain ideal moisture levels.

Using Grove Bags:

  • Introduction: Grove Bags are designed to maintain ideal humidity levels for cannabis storage without the need for burping.
  • Benefits: These bags provide consistent humidity control, are easy to use, and protect against mold and degradation.
  • Usage: Once the buds are dry, place them in Grove Bags for curing. The bags are self-regulating, so simply seal and store them in a cool, dark place.

Tips for Success:

  • Patience: Proper drying and curing are crucial for high-quality cannabis. Rushing this process can result in harsh smoke and diminished potency.
  • Observation: Regularly check for signs of mold or overdrying during the drying and curing stages.
  • Clean Tools: Keep all tools and workspace clean to prevent contamination.

By following these steps and tips, you can ensure your cannabis harvest is successful, resulting in high-quality, potent, and flavorful buds. Let me know if you need any further details or adjustments!
